Feared a home invasion...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

About 8 months ago I got a call from someone who wanted to see my "For Sale By Owner" house. He said he would come by 6 PM tomorrow. He calls back 10 minutes later and says he would be here in 20 minutes. I told him OK but after thinking about it he asked no questions about the house, spoke very little English and there was a lot of male Spanish voices in the background. I told my wife it didn't sound right and armed myself in case. There was an unsolved home invasion about 2 miles from me about 2 weeks before this. 25 minutes and no show so I called him and asked where he is, he tells me he'll be here in a couple minutes. With all the voices in the background I ask is he alone, stutter, a, a, a, yes I am alone. By now I'm about to drop a cookie :poo: in my skivies so I tell him if he shows up with bangers he had better be bulletproof, more a, a, a, I ask him if he understood what I was saying. He said yes, I call you back man. I called 911, told them please hurry because I was legally armed and the last thing I wanted was to be involved in a shooting. I thought that would get them here quick. 35 minutes later 2 units arrive, I opened the door, told them I was the homeowner and was legally armed how did they want to proceed. Officer asked would I mind surrendering my weapon for their safety I said no problem and told her there was one in the chamber. She asked if I would mind if she cleared it and they run my ccw and serial number. Once again, no problem. Very professional in every way. While making a report a big old Caddy with the boom boom, black windows and rims drives by I told them I never seen that car and they have to come back this way to get out of the sub division. They stopped the car ran their ID's and let them go, they were not latino, it wasn't them. They gave me back my pistol and told me reload it whenever I wanted. Long story short, they never showed or called again but turns out the cell phone they called me on was stolen so I'm convinced they were up to no good. I know I probably should not have threatened them or told the LEO's I threatened them but at the time I just didn't want them on my doorstep. I know "bulletproof" isn't as cool as "make my day" but I had no script writer LOL. I now have a realtor and keep the place locked. You just never know.

Better that you were prepared. You are not wrong in any way of defending your home or family.

:+1: Better safe than sorry. Glad they never came buy. Also amazing that police took that long to respond. More of a reason why we should be carrying and protecting ourselves as we cannot rely on police officers to do that for us

Scary world we live in. Amazing the stuff that goes through the criminal mind. To call a 4 sale by owner house to look at the house but really rob it is something no honest person could think of. I sleep better at night knowing I can protect myself.

I use birds and bucks and slugs at the range. I have birds if you wants some of those! Still haven't restocked on slugs or bucks yet.

Police aren’t required to protect you. In Warren v. District of Columbia (1981), the D.C. Court of Appeals ruled, “official police personnel and the government employing them are not generally liable to victims of criminal acts for failure to provide adequate police protection. . . a government and its agents are under no general duty to provide public services, such as police protection, to any particular citizen.” In Bowers v. DeVito (1982), the Seventh Circui t Court of Appeals ruled, “[T]here is no constitutional right to be protected by the state against being murdered by criminals or madmen.”

Looking into a few different options for ammo. Haven't decided yet. Don't really want slugs, if the woman had to use it she will not be that good of a shot with it.

I will rely on my AK with a red dot and (2) 40rd mags back to back. I saw something on Personal Defense TV that said more and more home invaders are wearing body armor. For that reason they suggested using a rifle for home protection. Personally I will have a few weapons ready to go including my .45, my AK, and a shot gun when I eventually buy one. If someone breaks in they will be carried out.

Body armor, doesn't help with a shotgun and headshots.

There is a yes and no to that! With the increasing ability of BGs to get quality gear you may have an issue. Standard level IIIA body armor provides some protection against a shotgun threat but nothing major. Add a level IV stand alone rifle plate to the equation and you may have a serious issue. Even with a direct hit depending on the caliber of weapon you may barely incapasitate your intruder. With a 12g there will be a serious stun factor but with anything else.... the intruder may not even realize he's been hit. The threat is real these days and BGs have all the gear that most civilians cannot get there hands on. If they don't have they sure have the ability to get it, unlike most. LE or certain Security creds are required for all normal purchases, but Bgs don't have to go threw that. They just find home boy and tell him what he needs and thats that.

For home defense with a shotgun the better option would be birds or bucks without getting into any speciality ammo that is. You don't have to worry about over penetration or anything of that with birds or bucks. With the Mrs it's fairly simple point and shoot. Amything within that general direction is hit guaranteed. If there are multiple intruders/attackers then that would be hit supurb to say the least.

The rifle is a great option hands down, but you then have to worry about over penetration and liability issues. There are a number of different complanies that are selling speciality ammo which is perfect for home defense situations. The better on the market in my opinion are Extreme shock http://www.extremeshockammo.net/tactical.asp, but there are many other companies selling frangibles.

You have a side saddle. Carry a couple of slugs and 00 buck, and load the tube with whatever you may need. You can do a tactical reload with a slug if you need to do a penetration or distance shot.

No offense to any LEO's but the police are better equipted to investegate and hang yellow tape. Not their fault, crimes usually happen NOW and BG's are long gone by the time they get on the scene.

Exactly...When I first decided to start buying firearms I spoke about that to my wife who was hesitant at first. One thing I was told was that a good response time for police would be about 10 minutes on average. With that being said I was instructed to pick up the phone and pretend to dial 911 and then just sit there and wait for 10 minutes. 10 minutes is a hell of a long time and the BGs will be long gone most of the time by then or at least inflict a hole hell of a lot of damage. Never rely on anyone else for something that you could or should do yourself!
