I have been casually browsing AK's for sale.. big price differences between Romanian, Chineese, Russian... so what should one look for in an AK..

I would like to find a quality AK ... not that I would buy one now :bolt:

For a cheap AK the GP1975 has gotten pretty good reviews. Stay away from the WASR rifles, they have issues from what I have read. If you want to part with some cash I hear the Arsenal Inc. AKs are the very best quality. I have a Romanian CAI GP1975 and it functions great. I have never had a FTF or jam of any kind with well over 1000rds through it. Its no tack driver but for engagement in a area 100yds and under, it will do the job. I keep it bedside with 2X40rd mags clipped together and loaded. I think for home defense it is perfect. I know it will always fire and never jam and I have 80rds on demand. I know it has good power and will hit anything within 100 yards. I love my AK.

what about over penetration for home defense though Dan?

That's what shotguns are for. You'll never see me shooting a bad guy with my AR15 (in the house). Unless it was the only way and I happen to have a clear shot from up stairs! But then I might take out a plumbing line. :(

Everyone knows the assault rifles are reserved for post apocalyptica and the zombies.

I just saw something on TV that said many home invaders were now using body armor. They said with body armor on you could not get penetration with a pistol or shot gun and a rifle was the best choice. I keep my .45 on the night stand too but I think the AK would work well. I am going to get some frangible ammo for it to ensure I dont get over penetration. Perhaps keep one mag loaded with the frangible stuff and one with the regular stuff. Fire the frangible first and if they keep coming then go to the regular stuff.

I was at the gun show in WPB selling a rifle for my dad last month and I walked by a display selling body armor. The THUGS that were around that booth really opened my eyes to who is buying that stuff. I will not be a victim.

My water and drain lines are below the slab unless my sinks or toilets are the backstops. I guess I have nothing to worry about! I think a carbine is one of the best offensive/defensive weapons to grab for CQB. The police and military seems to think so as well.

It is! You just need to have the proper ammo because over penetration is an issue if renting or living within close proximity to others. Frangibles tend to do the trick, but the you also have to look at the kind of armor the these gangland fools are using as well. Something like 10x12 plates will stand up to frangibles. Home defense is a hell of a thing when you brake it down. You really need to know whats best for your situation, but in my opinion a rifle is the way to go.

I'm not into AK's as you know; however, the Bulgy's are definitely the more sought after over the cheaper Romy WASR's. Pretty much all the Century stuff are the WASR's. Keep in mind that the receiver, barrel, flash hider, trigger group, and furniture are all US made to be compliant.

The Bulgarian rifles are very good. I have also heard the Yugo rifles are decent. The Romanian WASR rifles are terrible. The GP1975 is a Romanian stamped receiver with US parts. Out of the cheap Romanian rifles, its the better one.

If I were to buy another one I may look into an AMD65, a Polish Tantal (5.45x39), or a Czech VZ58. Just read a write up on the VZ58 and they tout its accuracy and design features. It was featured in this months "Shot Gun News" if anyone wants to read up on it.

I have read a few things about the Romanian PSL-54C. I read some have feed issues and some are shabby in construction with rivets protruding or cocked at an angle. For a semi auto that takes the 7.62x54R cartridge like the PSL-54C, I read either the Russian Tiger or Russian SVD are much higher quality but are very difficult to find and pretty expensive

ok here is my take on it.. I have had a romanian, and arsenal milled bulgy, and a romanian w us parts kit for 922 complientcy

The romy i had was the run of the mill 350 clunker..to my knowledge was not a wasr..just a romy with a stamped reciever.. I shot the shit out of that thing andnever had a hiccup..keep in mind..ak's are sloppy and this one was no different but it is the nature of the beast..ran great and never had a problem

The arsenal whick i got for arond 750.00 at the time (my guess would be somewhere around 1k now) was a milled reciever with new bulgarian kit. Fit and feel was awesome.gun ran great and again never had a problem but you get what you pay for. The arsenal has good solid weight and is machined beautifully. If cash isnt reall a problem..this would be a better way to go

If cash is no problem.. the best ak platform ever was the valmet and or galil as galil is basically a valmet in a different setup..if you got the 2k for a tit valmet or 2700-3500.00 for a galil..hands down no question do it..

Bottom line is when shopping for an ak..find on that hits yuu and just feels right..look for fit..how the action feels..sight tower canted..when you see the one you want..you will know it

ok I Own a WASR 10/63 and you know what it shoots great and is realiable. I redid the wood with a senona red and poly urethane coating and it looks great. aside from light cant, it still shoots dead one out to 100 yards. I have yet to have ANY issue! In the past there were some WASR issues and rumors and compared to some other AK's yes they come very rough .. but it is a great value. I will try and post pics sometime this weekend between shifts.

That rifle from Century is only $649 new. I have access to their prices now that I am registered with my C&R with them.

On a side note, I have a Century GP1975 AK and I love it. It works flawlessly. I believe the WASR rifles from Century are the problematic ones.

How are you able to order direct from Century? They're not C&R eligible because they use a new receiver and slap on the old parts, right?

You are correct, all I can do is view the prices. In order to view any prices on their website you have to have an FFL registered with them. It so happens that I have my 03 FFL C&R registered with them and have an account. It also so happens that it not only limits me to look at prices on the C&R stuff but all of their inventory. You can not get access to prices without an FFL on file with them and an account setup with them. Now my price is just what any regular guy with an FFL would get. I am sure places that do volume with Century get a much better deal.

JaxChris

Ahh, I thought all of Century's stuff was reman'd. Didn't know they had any original C&R's in their inventory. All I ever see with their name on it is AK's and a few other FA rifles converted to semi-auto.

J&G is pretty good, but Classic Arms works best if you are looking at one of their 'shipped' price rifles. I like Classic's "Shooters Package" they offer. Plus with any AK-variant bought from Classic, you get a decent discount on a case of Wolf in 7.62x39 (or if you call by phone you can get the discount on .223 instead).

Well 7.62x39 and 5.45x39 is still cheaper than 5.56 though, so the savings potential to make up for the increased cost of the AK's now compared to then.

so in your opinion.. it would be better to hold off for 1 year, 2 etc?

ss1
08-25-2009, 10:26 AM
The prices of all "assault style" firearms are heading south as we speak. The industry already has acknowledged that this 6 month boom is over with the exception of certain calibers of ammo. Unless Obamination decides to initiate tighter gun control, I'd really expect AK parts kits, etc to flood the market and drive them back to pre November levels. When that happens is when you should buy. Hopefully it would be less than a year. There is another factor to consider tho. Many of the importers have a high cost basis on existing inventory and may be reluctant to move prices down. Additionally, many dealers may be saddled with higher priced inventory and may be reluctant to buying cheaper new inventory until the older higher priced inventory moves.

+1 Which is why I won't go grabbing a bunch of .223 or XM193 right now. Currently I'm just grabbing some Federal XM193 as break in ammo for the current build. I'm hoping that XM193 bulk pricing will go back down to the 200$/case range (likely wishful thinking) as I know it will never approach the 2005 price of 150$/case. =(

This is why I'm going easy on the build, the boutiques are clogging up with inventory and starting up great sales to move it all at minimum profit just so they can free up capital to keep moving forward. I'll be waiting for barrels to do the same thing before I go crazy with multiple builds.

Right now most of the market is trying to protect itself from massive losses (it's like the housing market and Wall Street all over with them) - but I've found a couple sources that didn't gouge on the way up and are able to still offer great prices on backorders for many parts and ammo.

Unless you just have the item to go shoot a bunch right now, hold off on ammo purchases and let the people that stockpiled sweat it out.

One thing I noticed is all the big shops that were hoarding Q3131 and XM193 instead of selling it (waiting too long for higher margins) are now flooding the market with their built up supply but the price is too high for them to move it. This is a recent trend just in the past couple of weeks. Nobody is going to pay 400$/case of XM193 right now, anyone that would've already did spend that much on other ammo in the past few months.

Don't force yourself to buy anything now, you can wait until that item crashes down like other things already are. Get your lowers... Spike's Lowers now only 90$ on their website (gunshow for 100$ OTD still better though)! =)

Perhaps not as accurate at an AR but I can cut the center of the target out at 50 yards with mine with nothing more then a red dot on it. For defense, it will do the job and has a more powerful round then the 5.56 of the AR. There is a reason the rest of the world uses the AK platform. It is a reliable and accurate enough rifle to do the job in the event of a zombie invasion.

But yes, it is crude compared to an AR. Kind of like comparing a computer of the 90s to one today.

EWWWW I dont swing that way Cris.

Actually, I dont mind helping anyone out. I have 2 sets of head space gauges and 2 firing pin depth tools. And before you ask, I have 2 sets of all those tools because I was convinced I threw the first set out accidentally, then found them under a notebook on my desk. What an ass I am.

Cris
09-18-2009, 08:45 PM
Was going to say I know the firing pin depth tools come with the guns. The headspace gauging I told him was important and to make sure he checked that before he fired it.

Dan

I have the coin type head space gauges so I can check head space in a minute. If you like I can come by Gun Tech one evening and bring my tools. Let me know.

After extensive researching I found that the Chinese Norico was chosen by the US Navy seals. What does that tell you?
