So I'm looking to get another handgun in the near future and my two favorite pistols are the Beretta 92FS and the 1911 (do like the Walther too). So im trying to decide but I am leaning towards the 1911 becuase I already have a 9mm and the 92FS only comes in 9mm and it would be nice to have a .40 or .45. Even though I am leaning towards a 1911 I'm not really wanting to drop $1k on a pistol especially right now with everything going on with employment and ammo not exactly cheap (would be nice to have some cash to at least be able to shoot the damn thing). So I was looking at a Taurus PT1911, which I have yet to hear a bad thing about though as a whole I was told to avoid Taurus except if I was considering purchasing the 1911 or one of their revolvers. Cris also mentioned that there are other 1911 manufacturers that I can just purchase their base model and built it up slowly into a $1k pistol. So in typing this I think I have made up my mind on getting the 1911 lol, but any advice as to what manufacturer, model and their prices? I am doing my own research but figured that there are people on here (where's C3PO???) who have more experience with firearms and 1911s in general so I figured I would throw it out there.

Rock Island is decent and warrenty the gun for life... Springfield armory is good as well and you can get in for under 1k

If you plan on shooting your new toy often then the cost of the 1911 plus the cost of ammo should be enough to sway you towards the 92fs at this time. That being said, as much as I love my beretta, I would looove a 1911.....maybe its the big hands:o

to be honest the WWB .40 and .45 100rnd boxes cost with 1.00 of each other....anything aside from 9mm runs close to the same

Are you looking to get a shiny range toy or will this be your new goto sidearm? If it's a range toy get 9mm so it's cheaper to shoot. If this will be preferred handgun then get something in 45, remember the "9mm strong enough" thread. =)
That's about all I can say without being an asshole.
(where's C3PO???)
I'm a huge 1911 fan. A well tuned 1911 will make you feel better than no other handgun.
That's my complete unbiased opinion and I'm sticking to it.

See, Phil responds to C3PO when called. It just works.
I think when he signs on he should just do a search with new posts that contain C3PO, so he'll know where his attention is needed.
Plus can we change the NFA Items forum to "Ask C3PO - NFA Q&A".
Change his sig to "Hello, I'm C3PO, Human-ATF Relations. How might I serve you?"

Any ideas guys on a manufacturers? I don't want to spend $1k...looking more around $600-$700 perhaps. Like when speaking to Cris I was thinking of the PT1911 becuase of it's costs and I heard good things, but he said that there are other good manufacturers that will give you a very bland basic 1911 for that price and you can add things to turn it into a $1k pistol?

I think I've seen Springfield Armory 1911's (base models) for that price from online wholesalers. Check Bud's and places like that. Springfield's service is top notch for their lifetime warranty. They don't try to blow you off when you have a problem. Shit gets taken care of pretty quick from all the reports I've read online.
Taurus is decent. I've personally tuned some that I think would hold it's own against much more expensive mfgs. The one thing I found that they did tho that I didn't like was that they poorly stake the plunger tube which interferes with many high quality aftermarket magazines. I've found Rock Island a little too lax in spec to make a well tuned gun with how they mill the trigger area. I really like SA's quality, probably more than Colt's these days. Since nothing aftermarket 1911 is truly drop-in, you have some home builds that are complete train wrecks.

When I get a 1911, I will be buying a Springfield Armory. This won't be anytime soon though because it's just one of those guns I want for no good reason other than I really want it.

:+1: I like the Kimber Custom Stainless II

Taurus 1911 is a decent gun, well worth the price of admission and as Phill said comparable to much higher priced guns.
I have yet to see one that didnt function well with the exception of polishing the feedramp etc. which every good 1911 needs.
Word to the wise, the tighter the 1911 (better built) the more finiky it will be until it gets broken in. Find someone who just bought an incredibly expensive gun thats having feeding issues and proceed to tell them how big a POS it is then offer them 50% value for it.........lol.....you never know

I have heard also on some of the lower class 1911's that you are limited to what you can do to them also. So make sure you do your research. I would definitely take a Springfield Armory 1911 any day also. When you compare a lower model to a higher model you can see worlds of difference also. Take into consideration the money you will be putting into a lower class versus the higher class. Parts and labor may far exceed what you may have gotten with a higher class model to begin with.

:+1: I think the better bet would be the Springfield. i myself do not have a 1911 but I did some research to see what all the hype was about and it's always better to go with a trusted name such as Springfield. Great starter piece!

Yh I think I am leaning towards attaining a Beretta 90-two and then will add a SA 1911 or something
Berretta 92FS, nothing like dating yourself. I have never really cared for them, but to each his own. I know a few people like em and want em. (C3PO & Lino, but they are old).

Young punks like you don't read carefully. A 90-two is an entirely different gun than a 92FS. And yes, I do like them and I have all the Die Hard movies as well. :raspberry:
Is it still a Beretta? Yep, same shit. Looks like a cross between the 92FS and a PX4. I still don't like it. Die Hard, people actually bought those movies?

LOL...Yh I like the 92FS but don't like the grip on it as the bottom protrudes to far. Feels akward in the hands. If I am correct, the 90-two is just the newer version of the 92FS and allows for interchangeable grips etc. It also incorporates a rail as well. Please correct me if I am wrong or missing something.

Hey, why not? It is one of the best action genre series of all time. Box office numbers prove it.

It looks very similar to the PX4 grips. Maybe try and shoot that one at a range. I know Arizona rents the PX4.

You are essentially correct, however, they made a lot of asthetic changes to the milling of the slide as well. It is a big gun and people with small hands don't really like the big grip and the long reach to the double action position trigger. However, due to it's size, it is one of the smoothest shooting guns you will ever find and the drop block action which eliminates barrel tilt making it inherently accurate.

Frankly, I prefer the Beretta 96.
I would still prefer a quality 1911 over a Beretta 90-two/92/96 etc, however, I do like both. My recent improvement in my Beretta Storm's sights have re-established my faith in Beretta.

isn't the 96 just the 92?

Which is why Cris doesn't like it. You know he has those baby fingers attached to his little hands!

:+1: 1911 or Beretta? 1911 hands down!
Yeah, I could never get that all straight. I think the 96's are all 40S&W's but there are 92's that are .40 S&W I believe as well.
