View Full Version : Want your Permit Fast? (Sticky?)

Take your course of choice and then call your regional office of the Division of Licensing. They are located in Ft Walton, Orlando, Tampa, and now even Miami. Ask for an appointment for electronic application for concealed carry permit. Appointments are usually available within the next day or two. I called one afternoon and got an appointment for the next morning.
Here's the link to the regional offices - not all offer electronic submission, Miami JUST got theirs on 8/21/09:
http://licgweb.doacs.state.fl.us/staff/regions.html
What to bring:
Original Copy of Training Certificate
Your Florida ID
Check or Money Order for 117$
They will fingerprint you electronically, photograph you, and file your paperwork electronically - which goes directly into the approval system instead of wading in the pile of mailed applications for months. After the FBI background check comes back on your prints, 1-2 business days, your application is approved and mailed within about 1-2 days. After that you can expect the mail to take 4-6 days. Total time from the date of the appointment is 7-10 days.
Enjoy skipping the line and saving on the cost of doing it the old fashioned way.

Great post Jax. Thanks for the find. I will pass this info on.

Just don't go telling people at the gun shows and shit, then it'll get out of hand and appointments will take weeks in no time. They schedule appointments in 30 min blocks and the offices are not heavily staffed like the head office.

So wait what happens if I am assualted after I have waited 90 days to receive my permit. Can I sue the State for not living up to their rules of having to respond within 90 days??? Love how government goes one way. They make a law that they must respond within 90 days but it's ok if they break their own laws but we can't
Gotta love how they make and break their own rules. I have a friend who missed his renewal date by one day and they are making him do the whole process over again. For the total amount of $117 instead of the renewal price.
JaxChris

Renewals shouldn't be a problem, should they?
Renewals by mail goto a different group, so it is still much faster than initial permit processing. You can also make an appointment to go in for renewal to save a little bit of time if you wish.

Someone other than me? Mine expired in '06. I never remembered to renew because I had already sold the FN57. This is why I was looking around for the fastest way to get it back.
To everyone else, this is why Cris keeps me around, I find faster and cheaper ways of doing/getting everything. =)
I have to renew my appraisers license before it expires also. I haven't done it for a while, but if I don't renew I have to apply under the stricter rules and requirements. Florida is like this with all their licensing - if you miss your renewal you must reapply under a new license.
This is probably one of your best finds to date.

Maybe, but you've said that before. =)
so do you still have to take the course? or just fill out the paperwork and send it electronicly ?

LMAO!!! That's why they tell you to keep it in a safe place. Let me know if you need help with getting a new one.
Just FYI, I've read the office in Orlando knows the process well but the one in WPB is still clueless.
One of my buddies here in Miami just called the office earlier and they had no one there. They were aware of what the deal was.
JaxChris
08-26-2009, 11:31 AM
You have to have an original certificate from your training course with you. Also, a certificate is only good for so long toward applying for your initial permit. I'll have to find the rules, but if you look at the rules online it has a question in the FAQ that asks how long a certificate is good for. I believe it is 1-year off the top of my head.
The Orlando office was the first to have the system (because they do a lot of license processing - even shit that is mailed to Tally, the DBPR operates out of Orlando) and after that Ft Walton and Tampa. Jacksonville doesn't have it yet and I wasn't aware WPB was online yet. Miami just got it this past week and they're still getting used to it (what do you expect from idiot government workers, slow learning).
Anyhow, welcome to the fast track gents! =)
It doesn't say that anywhere in the instructions booklet they give out.
Jax, they have even added another option to the sex question. "unknown" you must have been working hard to get this option added to the application.

Question: Has anyone recently renewed their CWP? Did the renewal paperwork arrive well before the expiration date, as to give you time to mail it in ???
Actually Rich at Guntech got his within a safe amount of time. He renewed his maybe a month or so ago. Have you moved since you were issued the permit Doug?

No, same address. I was just wondering if it's comparable to a vehicle registration, which I received renewal notices 6 weeks in advance by mail.
JaxChris
08-27-2009, 12:31 AM
You'll likely receive a notice with about that much warning. But you only have to worry about the date they received your renewal (and/or cashed your check depending on who you talked to). That is the date they use to determine if you renewed on time or you are expired.

yh i think i will go with the crossbreed especially seeing I will be carrying full size at least for now...Anyone of you guys carry when your riding your bikes? If so how do you do it?
I carry every time I walk out my door. So yes, I carry on my bike. I just put the holster in my pants and the pistol in the holster. Just remember to take it off when going to Markham park to shoot and if you go on a school campus. I tuck my shirt in a little in the back when riding so it doesnt go up and expose the pistol. You will love the crossbreed, its so comfortable. I dont even realize I have mine on.

You can wear the waist holster. Not an issue. Its comfortable while riding. Just tuck your shirt in a little so your shirt stays down. If you wear a jacket when you ride, that will keep your shirt down enough.
JaxChris
08-28-2009, 09:32 PM
Considering my usual method of dress (button up over undershirt), I've been heavily considering a shoulder holster because I think it would be the most comfortable for sitting in a chair 12 hours a day.
My concern is that even as comfortable as the Crossbreed is, it is still only the most comfortable model in probably the least comfortable style of carry for my daily activity - being a desk jockey and all. Ergonomic chairs would just make the bulge of the carry system jab into my lower back and I would be in agony for it later.
Crossbreed is the way to go when riding.

I actually grabbed a bellyband holster today at the show. It supports the compact/subcompacts quite well. I tried a demo 1911 in it and it seems too tall and cause it to tip outward. I also checked out the CellPal and it had the same results, not good for fullsize but fine with compact/subcompact.
Didn't see any shoulder rigs that looked worth a damn and couldn't find any nice IWB holsters either. Took the bellyband for 20$ to start off. I'll likely end up with a IWB (Decantis or Crossbreed) and shoulder rig also to cover all the concealment scenarios I'd ever expect myself in. I may grab a CellPal for summer wear (i.e. Beach, poolside, places where tops aren't worn).
This has been confirmed, my buddy called me today saying he got his permit already. Took less than two weeks to get it back.

I'm actually considering just using the XDm in a shoulder holster through the winter while I move in with my GF and save up money. Once I have enough extra money to easily pick up my Glock 30 I'll be all ready for summer again.
I've been picking up some button up shirts and stuff, and when it gets cold enough I have a nice leather jacket or a zip up hoodie that I could use.

JaxChris
09-09-2009, 05:56 PM
No, renewals must be done by mail. They will mail you a notice 150 days before your current license expires. They suggest you send back your renewal as fast as possible as it should take 30 days to process through the mail.
Also, you can go upto 6 months late on your renewal before your license becomes void. If you're late it is an additional 15$ late fee.

Thanks. I'm not up for renewal until next year, but it never hurts to find out early. Honestly, I would never and have never waited for anything to expire (i.e. DL, Reg, ) like some people intentionally do, and then use the "urban legend" on how there are unwritten laws that state you have an "extra month" or so even when it expires. Link to Division of Licensing FAQ (http://licgweb.doacs.state.fl.us/contacts/faq.html#Q6)
Can I Renew Online? If not, how do I renew my license?
Unfortunately, online renewal is not yet available. Approximately 150 days prior to the expiration date of your license, the Division will send you the renewal form with complete instructions on how to renew your license. To help assure the Division of Licensing has sufficent time to process your renewal application prior to the expiration date of your current license, complete and return your application immediately to:

I actually called the Regional Office where I submitted mine today because I hadn't received it yet. They said there was a flag on mine, so they gave me to the Verification Department.
Called them and spoke with a Mr. Blue and he looked at my file. Turns out they goofed and flagged my file when issuing a hold on someone else's application that had an arrest record, but I never received a letter or notice of the flag because it wasn't actually my application that was flagged (fucking weird example of human error). He cleared it up and issued my permit on the spot. Turns out he's the guy that fixes any flags and he has a direct number.
If you come across some weird delay on your application call him @ 850.245.5665 and Mr Blue should pick up. Pretty pleasant guy to talk to and it only took about 5 minutes to sort it all out. So I should now receive my permit within the week.
Seems I'm always the lucky one like that, but atleast I found yet another shortcut for us when dealing with the Division of Licensing.
I'll probably be ordering a Crossbreed or a shoulder rig this weekend to go with my belly band holster. The belly band is nice, but it tends to let the grip tilt outward if not fully pushed in the right way, and it does give a bit throughout the day from just sitting and standing repeatedly around the house. So it'll be fine for very loose clothing, but for tighter apparel I'll need something that stick the firearm to my body.

09-17-2009, 01:53 AM
CellPal (30$) or CrossBreed (70$) bring your pistol to the next gun show and you'll find a guy selling the CellPal, try it out with your pistol. Since the XDm is like a boomerang I wouldn't bother trying a bellyband holster, and the grip may even be too long to easily conceal in a shoulder rig. So the next best bet would be a CrossBreed or that new Desantis clone that Cris has been giving input on.
Crossbreed only right now. I have thrown the XDM in my crossbreed several times to show customers that the crossbreed is a great product. I am still waiting on Desantis, he keeps telling me its getting closer. They have had some problems with the clips though. They are trying to get something that has more tensile strength than the current crossbreed has.
JaxChris
09-17-2009, 09:45 AM
There would be a trade off or some sort to do that. If you want more strength you'd have to increase weight. You can't find increased strength, that's just as easy to machine, and is the same weight or lighter.
Weight really isn't a big factor when it comes to the cross breed. It can be done for sure, just finding the right supply and bend will be the factor. You can't buy the cheap metals from China, you need good old American supply.
Satan_3pc
09-17-2009, 11:24 AM
I figured crossbreed was my only real option. So what's the drill here? They have custom options for each gun type on the website. What should I order? I've been on there before and saw they had some upgrade leather types for sweat and stuff. Is that worth it? I am outside a lot and I sweat quite a bit.
Horse hide is more resistant to moisture. Don't waste your money on J-clips, they suck. Combat grip, not recommended for a full size pistol like the XDM, because the grip will be hitting your waist all the time.

He sais it can take a few hours. I have yet to put any on mine, so I couldn't be exact, but everytime I bring it up to him he's always bitching about tight they are etc.

we still talking about the sights? :bolt:
It can take up to an hour usually. There is no efficient way to remove them. A big hammer and a brass punch, then just cross your fingers.

LOL, glad to hear it. Didn't want to see something about the sights being weak and feeling like I needed to change up my draw. =)
Sometimes heat from a torch and a douching from penetrating oil will also help.

That exact quote in a gun shop is fine. However that same quote with two guys in a seedy motel room is all wrong!!!!

I just renewed my permit, and received it today. Mailed it off on January 27th, and received it today in the mail. Not too bad (2 weeks)!!
I heard the renewals are handled differently than the new permits.

I heard the same. And 7 years is good too!
You can also renew at the new electronic places, if you know anyone who needs to renew.

As of when? Two weeks ago, the office said that they do not do renewals, as did the state web site.

awesome turn around time..

I was told by an officer he did his renewal there. This was prior to two weeks ago. I don't see why it would have changed. Unless he lied to me, which I don't see why he would.
