Well, when I first saw the GSG, I told myself that I had to get one. Apparently so did everyone else, so the high demand postponed my purchase of one. Soon came the GSG-5 Pistol which was more in line with what I wanted to do, SBR and then suppress the sucker which you can't help but want to do since the rifle version has that faux suppressor to make the 16" barrel requirement look less awkward. Other projects came and went and suddenly I found myself staring at the new GSG-5PK in the latest Small Arms Review. "Holy crap!" I said as I saw it SBR'd with Gemtech's tri-lug adapter and folding stock. As luck would have it, Rich had one at Guntech and I now have my next SBR project in the works.

Pics to follow, but here's a nice YouTube video of it.

How much do GSG's run. Considered getting one but right now focused on getting a Nagant, Beretta and building another AR. Those are my next toys I would like to pick up

I think they all have a MSRP of $489 or $499. Pricing varies greatly tho as discounters will be in the low $425ish range while gougers will mark them up over MSRP.

HK had one on the wall at the SHOT Show. Of course Cris, Professor and I all had to touch it and at least I think I creamed my pants. I also got to work on a select fire MP 5 duty gun. The finish on that one was so rough, it had a brown patina to it.

I've got a Vector V-51 .308 that will eventually get suppressed even tho it's one of those guns that is "cooler" experiencing at full percussion. AndyB planted evil thoughts in my head of making it a host gun for a registered sear. Sucks that I can buy a complete FA trigger assembly for less than $200, but it will cost me $8K-10K to get the same thing with a registered serial number etched in it plus the stamp.

Thats why i sold my orginal HK MP 5N...knew i would never get the sear pack

JaxChris

How can you buy the trigger pack for 200$? Civies can't buy those can they? I thought you could only buy a registered MP5 lower to do FA?

If money was out on the tree, I would build up a select-fire (safe-semi-full-burst) MP5SD3. =)

Phil correct me if im wrong but if the gun was a registered reciever (sear married to gun) yes a replacement part would be say 200.00 but if it is a registered sear there are no replacement parts (the sear breaks ,your SOL unless you have it rewelded)

You are correct.

Jax, as Adam outlines above, you can either have a registered receiver or a registered sear. The registered sear allows you to move it to different host guns, while the registered receiver allows you to buy this for $129:

http://www.robertrtg.com/mp5fcg.html

For HK's, when they convert them to semi-auto, they change the mounting point on the front part of the trigger group. You can convert it back to accept a FA group to make a host gun.

ETA: there's also some changes to the bolt carrier to make it semi-auto only by some clone builders. My V-51 already has a FA bolt. :)

JaxChris

So the upper receiver of the MP5 is the registered firearm? That means I wouldn't be able to just get an MP5n upper receiver and convert it to an SD3 that easily. =(

Oh well, I've seen full MP5SD3's going for 15k on the market anyhow. If I'm going to pay that much I'd rather have a very clean M16 lower that I can do any style/caliber I want with it. The MP5's are limited to a single caliber each if the upper is the controlled part, right?

ss1
09-03-2009, 06:48 AM
You can change the caliber temporarily to say from a 9mm to a 40 or permanantly with a letter to the BATFE, but not from a MP5 to a different receiver such as an HK91. Most sears are registered under all 3 calibers.

Day 1

I completely stripped down the GSG. Interestingly enough, the GSG is much more complicated than the gun it emulates. A person can strip an MP5 with pretty much no tools with the exception of removing the barrel/trunion. Not the case with the GSG. Screws abound, the receiver comes apart into two basic clamshells along with many parts. I'm going to ship out the right side of the receiver to have it engraved with my trust info. The metal is sort of a zinc alloy and is probably soft enough to have anyone engrave, but I'm going to stick with Chuck Smyder at www.nflgun.com. He engraved my 9MM AR lower to perfection. I'm going to suggest engraving in the rail groove.

Inspecting the barrel and ramp, I immediately saw how rough the ramp was and immediately went to polishing it. Hopefully this will allow the gun to eat pretty much all .22LR in the future. I'll be submitting the Form 1 on Tuesday.

Forgot to time line things. The lower got mailed out to Chuck for engraving on Thursday 9/10 and the F1 paperwork was sent out Friday 9/11. In the next week, I need to decide on which servicable .22 can to go with.

Instead of Gemtech's adapter, I might just go with this one at the bottom of the link. I like the protector better, as I think I can use the 3 lug 9mm can that I have on it to give it a more authentic look on a limited basis.

Thanks. I'll probably take you up on that. I ordered the swarfworks 3 lug threaded adapter today. I'll let everyone know what I think of the workmanship. I'm going to stop by Lee's Pawn during the week to see what's available in stock and maybe give Andy B a shout too.

Update:

9/18 - Received Swarfworks 3 lug adapter. Awesome fit and finish and fits perfectly with my 9mm suppressor. Some time in the next week or two I'm going to narrow my choice of .22 suppressors, as I still need one for the Ruger 10/22.

9/21 - $200 check cashed by the BATFE. Yeah, only 90 days or so and counting.... The reality is that with the holiday season coming up, things slow down a lot over there. I'm hoping I got in under the wire and can have my GSG with a nice stock and K-grip by Christmas.

Update: 9-28-09 - Went to Lee's Pawn in Margate and bought a Tactical Innovations TAC 65 can. Very afforadable and lightweight. Sure, it won't last like a stainless steel model, but it does come with a lifetime warranty. Sending in the Form 4 today.

I am still not sure which stock to go with: standard collapsing stock or the side folder. The side folder is more true to the MP5PK, but I think the collapsing stock is a cleaner look. Oh well, I've got a couple of months to decide.

JaxChris

Update 10-22-09 - took the day off and ran about 300 rounds (Remington Golden Bullet Bulk pack) thru it. The Golded Bullet is just a light copper plated hollow point. The first mag fed without a single hiccup and I breathed a sigh of relief. Sighed too soon as the second mag started experiencing FTE with the fired casing sitting horizonally just inside the ejection port usually midway or within the last 10 rounds. I then popped on the 9mm suppressor and it worked flawlessly. Blowback pressure must be higher in the short 5 1/2" barrel with the suppressor is what I'm thinking. Eventually the last 3 mags emptied without issues. I suspect that the action just needed to work itself in. I'll monitor the reliability as we move along with different ammo. I'll love to test it with a dedicated .22 suppressor and compare the dB difference without hearing protection. Maybe the professor can sneak me a sound meter........

I'll go thru it and try to summarize which is something that many times I hate seeing as a project over time with piecemeal parts is soooo much easier to digest. Also, the UTG clawmount is very inexpensive compared to the real deal.

Looking good too. That red dot optic is going to be so high though.
It's about the same as the Vector, so I think it should work as long as there's no riser on the optic. ie an Aimpoint M4 wouldn't work well, but the micro or clone should do.

how about an ATN digital Halo?
I took a carbine class where someone had a similar optic and could not acquire the red dot whenever he had to shoot prone with the rifle punched forward as if you were shooting under a cover such as a car. Also I remember someone else with one where he had to adjust the elevation so high that the spring loaded "body" was only a screw turn from popping off the base. So not really what I'm looking for at this time.

ss1
12-04-2009, 04:02 PM
Yeah, it was less than 2 months and technically, it was sent after my SBR paperwork and approved before it. Lee said he received it along with a bunch of others two days ago and hadn't gone through them yet so that means BATFE probably sat on it for at least a couple of weeks before mailing them out. I ran into something similar with Only The Best where it took over a month for them to receive it after BATFE confirmed its approval. While F1's generally get sent to individuals so they are mailed right away, it seems that SOT FFL's get the F4's in monthly bundles. :idunno:
