This is a G17 with a Basic Reduction and Finger Grooves Removed. I used my slide on the client's gun for photo purposes...I know the sights are rusted...I have two factors that allow me to rust just about anything: I live in Miami and I sweat battery acid.

This is a G19 that was previously modified by Bowie Tactical. The client sent it to me because he wanted to be able to get a higher grip on the gun, and he also wanted my Glove Bevel. I finished it off with my style texturing.

Here's a before/after set of a Robar Glock 35 I did for a San Diego LEO. He wanted the finger grooves removed, and after he got it back, he decided that he missed the finger grooves so he sent it back and had me put finger grooves back on. :rich:

This is a very early G17. Note the Euro proof marks, and almost crude wraparound band of factory texturing. Also note the chip missing from the magwell. The plastic on these older Glocks is very hard and often brittle. It took me a long time to texture this, because the plastic wanted to liquefy as soon as it got hot. It also took some serious surgery to repair the chip and reinforce the entire magwell area so that it didn't happen again. The client wanted an Extreme Reduction, Finger Grooves ADDED, and Round/Polished Trigger Guard.

G19 with Extreme Reduction and texturing on left-side frame flat. When working with OD frames like this, the plastic will often discolor and look blotchy; I've figured out a way to even out the discoloration so that it's uniform, and gives the grip a nice two-tone look.

What is that grip made out of that you put on, and how durable is it?
JaxChris
10-05-2009, 03:58 AM
It's not "put on". He textures the existing polymer frame. It doesn't come off. It is as durable as the pistol itself, because it is the pistol. Proper methods will remove a small amount of material, but won't affect rigidity or stability - similar to properly fluting a rifle barrel (accept a fluted barrel also has the added benefit of noticeable weight removal).

if you look at the 'before' photo of the Glock that was customized by Robar, that's an example of a grip with an applied coating. I'm not sure what material Robar uses, but I've restored several guns they did, and all of them exhibited the same issue of the coating cracking near the magwell and the coating peeling off in that area. That's not a knock against Robar, because they do good work, it's simply what happens when rigid coatings are applied over a flexible plastic grip.

what he said. ;)Oh, I see it now on that close up you posted. I thought maybe that's what it was, but the perfect shaping around the edges all the way up to almost the back of the slide makes it look almost like it's popping out and adding a thin layer to the gun so I got confused. Very nice. When I get my Glock 30 for concealed I may have to have you do some work on it.

yes, I know the serial numbers show in some of the pics. I tried to edit this, and photobucket was being a PITA. Regardless, the customer's frame serial number isn't showing, and the slide/barrel assy I put on the frame for photo purposes are from my 'orphaned Glock parts' spares collection, so the serial numbers are irrelevant.

JaxChris

It looks like some of the black polymer under the colored frame is bleeding through, is that a desired effect or more of an unavoidable side-effect? I'm kind of on the fence about it.

It still looks good though. If it was the desired effect then of course that would be perfect!
Gentle Ben
10-08-2009, 07:50 AM
Phil, thanks. The darkening of the grip happens as a result of the texturing, from the heat. However, the effect is blotchy and not very uniform...I then intentionally darken it so that the effect is even as possible so it looks like it's supposed to be that way. Sort of getting lemons and making lemonade, knowhutmsayin? Soon I will be set up to do Cerakote; At that point I will offer an option to Cerakote the textured portion of the grip black, gray, etc, so that it's a true two-tone effect.
JaxChris, the OD Glocks are not black underneath; they are OD through & through...except on some I've found deposits of yellow plastic inside, probably from the color pellets Glock uses that didn't melt/distribute evenly through the polymer mix.

I would have to play with one of your completed weapons to see if I want to have this done to any of mine. It looks great but of course it comes down to a matter of feel and comfort.
Now it could be just me, but i think the M&P looks the best out of all with the custom work put on it.
Cerakote will be a nice addition. I just had some work done earlier this year. Please let us know when that is up and going so we can pass it on to Guntech.

Mmmmm Cerakote, my favorite!
As for the color under OD, my bad. I'm curious though, will you be doing Cerakote before or after stippling? I ask because I wonder if you'd get a more uniform black showing through the grip if you Cerakote'd a black frame and then stippled it.
I think I'm going overboard... shutting up for now. =)
Gentle Ben
10-08-2009, 06:45 PM
the grip would be Cerakoted after texturing.
There's no reason to Cerkote a black frame black... Maybe gray or 'salmon.' ;)

I was thinking Cerakote "Armor Black" which is a grayish black to give a subtle 2-tone. Not a good idea?
When you get the Cerakote ready, you going to post prices for rifle part coating also?
Gentle Ben
10-08-2009, 08:32 PM
I thought you were worried about the black discoloring and needing to be Cerakoted.
A two tone would definitely look good, but I don't know if you'd want to go too subtle, because then it might just look dirty. Just MHO.

I don't think Ceracote has the variety of colors that Duracoat offers unfortunately.
Ben, you do the best polymer stipple work that I have seen. Are you going to offer any metal work on the slide (melting) in the future?
I notice that you don't do a lot of mag cutouts are they not a very popular modification or do you not see much need for them?
On another note, thanks for steering me towards Mercop I just took his Combative Pistol class after reading a review that you did on another forum. Good class.
