I read the following passage from AK47.net :
What makes the Kalashnikov action so reliable, is also what causes its inevitable downfall, the violent manner in which it works. Each time you fire your rifle the gas system propels the bolt carrier to the rear very violently, which generates a shock wave that is absorbed by the metal receiver. After a period of time, this repeated pounding causes the action itself to lose its structural integrity. The most notable side effect of this happening is the difficulty you have in controlling the weapon during rapid fire. By installing a Recoil Buffer you totally eliminate the metal to metal impact of the bolt carrier to the receiver and most of the action noise.
so.... I saw one for $5.00 shipped so I picked one up

They also stated
Do they really work? - Several people have had problems with various AK's that had a vibration in the trigger that caused them pain after 50 shots (trigger snap). After installing the buffer, it stopped the vibration. If you have an AK that locks up at the fully rearward position like the bolt carrier wants to pop out, installing a buffer will fix it. For $15.00 a piece it is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy for your gun.
Known Problems - Occasionally an AK will not function correctly due to the ammunition and the location of the buffer. With low pressure ammunition the buffer prevents the bolt from completely cycling, thus a new round is not chambered and the gun will not fire. This can be fixed by changing ammunition, by reducing the width of the buffer or removing it from the gun.
I have yet to test it .. to be continued
