I have been shooting IDPA for about the last... man, I guess 6 or 7 years. I shoot with the Tropical Sport Shooting Association (www.tssaidpa.us) down here in SE Florida. We have a monthly IDPA match at Markham, and one at Trail Glades and we do a drills/training night where we do pistol on one side and carbine on the other.

I have also been running a carbine match with TSSA for the last 4 years called South Florida Defensive Carbine. I made up the rules, I design about 95% of the stages, I do the data entry and posting of the scores, I mediate and officiate at the matches, and I even win sometimes! :rich:

The SFDCC matches were featured in an article I wrote for SWAT magazine earlier this year.

I have also shot in a coupe of IPSC/USPSA matches, and am anxious to get out and shoot more, as well as the monthly steel match at Markham park.

I think competition is great practice, and you can learn a lot about yourself, your guns, and your gear if you participate in the right kind of competition with the right practice. Competition isn't training, but it's better than not shooting at all!

I'm not into competition, I just like to train.

The problem becomes, especially down here, where do you train? Competition is a great way to maintain the skillsets in between classes or what have you. You don't even have to shoot to be competitive, you can just shoot the stages the way you want to, at the pace you want to, within the safety limits of the facility. I shot an IDPA match last weekend for the first time in quite awhile. The stages called for three rounds per target, plus a few other things. I shot them as many times as I thought they needed shooting, and ran the stage the way I thought it should be run.

Competition doesn't have to be competitive, and is a great opportunity for practice to maintain the skills.

Ive done some IDPA and USPSA

Im tinkering with the idea of starting to get heavy into some steel shooting, I have an STI thats been collecting dust for a few years thats waiting for a race gun treatment.

I traveled around when I was a younger man shooting bench and bullseye matches with rifles which was always where my heart was.

Recently moving to Texas has been a god send, wanna talk about alot of places to go shoot.
Theres a private club with a shoot house and 600 meter range less than 10 miles from my house thats open 24 hours a day with lighted rapid fire courses and long range rifle courses.....God bless Texas

Yh I've actually been to a few of the IPSC matches at Markham. I really wanna get into it along with the carbine. Other than shooting from a bench I have not shot the carbine in any type of practical/competition/training setting

A guy told me about an AR comp and a pistol comp, that I wouldnt mind at least learning more about, and hopefuly trying. I would also like to try some longer range type stuff, I met a guy back, I think he said they start at 600 and quit when a guy loses, I lost his number but he built his own guns/set up for the competitions. Its something I have thought about, I dont think I would be that good at the long range stuff, but the courses he told me about for the ARs and pistols sounded like alot of fun.
