that's a damn nice whitetail.

Growing up in MT, I hunted deer, elk, bear, and antelope, not to mention upland birds. I've never considered hunting a 'sport,' rather something I did as a very economic way to fill the freezer with the most organic, free-range meat available. For the price of a deer tag (about $15 last time I hunted) and the price of one cartridge (loaded my own), I got 100+ lbs of tasty venison.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed every aspect of hunting: communing with nature, pitting my relatively soft wits against the wits of animal attuned to its natural environment...an awkward predator hunting a quarry with a sense of smell/hearing/etc are far more sensitive than mine.

Humans are at the top of the food chain, and the privilege of that position is getting to eat the tasty creatures beneath us. Of course we're only at the top of the food chain because of our weapons...without those, we stand very little chance of bringing down a deer, and would be pretty much f#cked if we had to go tooth and nail against a bear, mountain lion, or even a pack of frail coyotes.

Suffice it to say, I'm an unapologetic carnivore. ;)

Well stated Ben and similar to my thoughts. My wife might be more in line with Adam's thoughts, but we are tolerant of each other since we both have guns....... :rich:

Nice kills. I have no problem as long as people are gutting it themselves and taking the meat. I hate the trophy hunters.

:+1: The younger animals (e.g. not the old crusty bucks with a huge rack of antlers) are the tastiest anyway.

Did I keep the horns and antlers from animals I took? Hell yes...I'm not going to be an idealistic wenis and throw them away out of principle...they are a tangible reminder of the hunts, long after the meat is gone.

Now I'm craving some venison. backstrap and heart. :eat::eat::eat::eat::eat::eat:

Nothing wrong with keeping the hors and heads of the animals, as long as you took the whole reason of hunting in the first place. There are lots of people who go to hunt for just the heads and antlers. Those are the people I dislike. Don't get me wrong, I love me some venison. I have no problem killing the animal or gutting them.

I hear you. When I was a kid I remember several incidents where guys from CA, NY, wherever, would come out to 'hunt' and kill an animal and take only the head and cape, maybe a few choice cuts of meat, and leave the rest to rot. These guys would often ignore posted private property and go where they wanted. Suffice it to say, the locals didn't take kindly to that type of behavior, and most of the time the assholes would be caught by the game warden.
