So I've decided for my next build, rather than go with a new AR or pickup a Rem. 700 I would like to get a 22 for the time being. A big reason being how cheap the ammunition is etc.
Now I don't want to spend a lot of money right off the bat. I prefer to buy something really really cheap that I can shoot right now but over time I can make some upgrades etc. Any ideas or can anyone give me some opinions of where to start. I was thinking a dirt cheap base gun around $150-$200 but leaves open the options to upgrade as I play with it and decide what I like/want.

if you are looking to go the rifle route..the Ruger 10/22 is the best way to go and leaves you open to a money pit of options

Get a real 22 upper for your AR. This will allow you to goto the range for cheap with the AR and not have another full weapon to buy, maintain, dump tons of money into.
You can either go the 22 conversion bolt route (about 200$ plus 20$/mag) or get a whole dedicated 22 upper for 500$ and option it to be an identical trainer to your real AR upper.
That's just my thought on the matter. =)

yh but I think I want my 22 to be completey separate from my AR. I don't like the idea of swapping back and forth on my AR from a 22 to a 5.56. I would rather just spend the $200 for the conversion route on a seperate dedicated 22 rifle. As for the $500 well, if I choses either of the two options you laid out I would go with that one, but for $500 I could buy the rifle and make some considerable upgrades.

Why not? My AR get disassembled every time I put it away anyways. It's as simple as popping two pins in. Remember, Jax is the cheap cost efficient guy. To each their own though. I want a .458 upper. MWUHAHAHHA!!!

10/22's are fun, cheap, and diverse. Instead of being repetitive though I figured I would throw out a different option...lol This is something I have been looking at along with some Remi's although Savage has what I want for the best price so I will probably buy it or maybe the model up which I will add under it.

we had a marlin 60 in the shop the other day and it's actually pretty nice, especially for the money, under $200 new. if you just want something that's cheap then that's a great option. if you want to mod it down the road then go for the 10/22, so many options! I like the 10/22 but I went for the M&P 22 instead, I just liked the idea of having another AR15 style rifle that's cheap to shoot.
