Dick's Sporting Goods this week has an in-store sale on the Remington 700 ADL in Realtree Camo for 489$ and a 40$ rebate to bring the price down to 449$ + tax.

I remember one or two people mentioning wanting to look for a Rem700...

p.s. If you want to spend 550$ on Remington products (buy the rifle for 489$ plus some Rem .308 ammo?) you get a 40$ Dick's Giftcard. And if you sign up for the Frequent Shopper Program (like the BestBuy RewardZone) you will get 20$ Dick's certificate for this purchase.

This would mean for could buy the Rem700 plus 4 boxes of Rem .308 ammo for around 555$ + tax. Then you could get a total of 100$ back in rebate/giftcard/certificate. Final total would be about 495$ after tax.

Good deal?

The ADL is a good hunting rifle but not a good base for a precision rifle because of no floorplate unless you go all out and replace everything but the bolt and receiver which then it wouldn't matter. I'd still go with a varmint contour barreled BDL Remy.

It is a good price for a hunting rifle with camo stock and it is probably very accurate but as mentioned by C3PO it is not a good base for a precision tack driver, specially if your are looking for a "tacticool" end result....

Unless you get a good deal on an used stick from someone that's looking to upgrade, a precision rifle will run you pretty steep.

I did a budget built based on a Remi 700 XCR and I'm at the 2 Gs mark and thats me doing the little things that some people take to smiths. I still need a sling and a case for it.

My advise to you, if your looking into a tactical bolt action? Get as much information as possible on your options and educate yourself on precision shooting. I know people that have made costly mistakes buying top of line hardware and years later learn that they don't care much for it.

Yes it adds up quickly. I started with a Rem 700 SPS Tactical which is a great value at $650ish. It's a nice starter rifle but certainly not the "1000 yrd tack driver" base due to the shorter 20" varmint barrel. I will rebarrel it with a SS match barrel when the time comes. So far, I've installed:
Badger Ord detachable mag housing @ $350 + extra AI mag @ $100
Bolt machined for a tac knob and spiral fluting - $125
Harris swivel bipod - $90
I worked on the trigger bringing it to a nice 2.25 lb pull - $0
Badger Ord 20 MOA picatiny base $130
Badger Ord med 30mm rings $150
Leupold Mk IV 4.5x14x50 LTR/M2 $1,280

So that's $2,225 not including the rifle. I am going to fit a McMillan A5 stock on there which will be in the $700+ range depending on options etc and the barrel is going to be $300. As you can see, it can add up considerably and as M@x said, if you can find a used stick that has what you want where someone has decided it wasn't for them or are upgrading using a different platform, you can find some significant savings.

There's some really good out of the box factory tack drivers that may seem expensive, but are really bargains when you start adding how much all the custom stuff really costs.

hmmm interesting....when the times comes, I'm gonna have to make some decisions then. What are your opinions on the Tikka T3? My buddy has one and he had debated between the T3 and the 700 and ended up choosing the T3 obviously. What are the differences?

Anthony,
To tell you the thruth, I don't have any personal experience with any of the Tikka line. I did hear that the Tikka T3 is a value line model made by Sako of Finland (owned by Beretta), so it should be a good piece of hardware. As for Remi they have and are coming out with some impressive out-of-box performers which are hard to beat.

My personal decision on Remi as an entry level rifle was the simple fact that there is a whole world of aftermarket options available for the 700 line, thus making it easier to go from an out-of box unit to a modded one.

I've shot the T3 and it seems very smooth right out of the box....but yes that fact that there are so manu aftermarket options for the 700 has made me lean that way as well.

Maybe if Tacticaladv gets a together an outing, you can take my Remi for a spin...
