Springfield released their new XDm's in 3.8" models this month. The 3.8" is comparable to the 4" Service model of the original XD's - still has the insanely long grip of the XDm's.
Still has the same capacity also. We ordered them for the shop last week. Forgot to post up about it.

I don't understand why they felt compelled to shrink the slide/barrel without shrinking the grip. After all, they talk about more concealment... unless you use a shoulder holster, the grip is the most likely part of any pistol to profile through your clothes. And the XDm has a very long grip in order to stuff 19-rounds in there.
Hopefully, if they ever make an XDm with a shorter grip, they will leave the 3.8" length. There's a reason why the 45Compact is the favorite XD of people that own multiple models - and why a number of people take the 9/40 Service models and have the grips chopped. =)

Jackasses. I'd have loved a XDm with a 10 round grip and 3.8 inch barrel. Assholes. I'd have said FUCK that Glock 27. Assholes. I'm mad. Assholes.

Buy the XDm 3.8" and send it to Boresight for an experimental grip chop and custom mag cutdown. I'm sure if you don't mind the first mag being potentially ruined, Ben would probably enjoy being the first on the block to perform such a surgery.

Not that I don't think Ben does great work, but no thanks!

Hey Cris let me know when they come into the shop. I'd love to check one out to see how it fits on my rather round ass.

I got both XDM-9 and XDM 3.8. I get to carry the XDM 3.8 FBI style in order to conceal the long grip. I am big and fat so it help too.
There is a video in You Tube. Comparing both XDMs. Check it out ! Both handguns are twins with exception of the slide and barrel.

This is what the XDm's should look like. I remember mentioning this before somewhere else on here and Matt didn't think the backstraps would stay with a chop, but here's the proof. And it makes the weapon look so much better. If they came out with this size XDm (wouldn't even need to do the Fusion treatment to the slide) I would buy 2.

Whats the capacity on that chop?

16+1 for the XDm-9 and 13+1 for the XDm-40. You know you want it. =)
They even will chop you some XD mag sleeves to use on regular XDm mags.

Once the XDm-45 3.8 model comes out, I may grab 2 and send them off for chops instead of waiting for SA to make them. The best thing about doing it with the XDm-45 is that it uses my existing (and growing) collection of XD-45c mags. Currently I have 4 short and 2 long mags, 2 short and 1 long on the way this week, and another 2 short and 1 long will be ordered next week. Being able to still use my existing mags after an upgrade will be really nice.
Photoshop of the dream gun - granted if I did get bitone it would get the Fusion treatment.

Yeah I am wondering is how they chopped that 9mm? What did they do for the magazines? The magazines for the XDm-9 are different than the regular XD-9.
Notice there is no picture shown of the chopped one with no spacer.... <--- EDIT: Never mind. I saw the picture on the previous page. I'd still like to know how they did it????

If you look at XD and XDm mags, you'll notice it is unibody steel with a rolled out flare that the base plate slides onto. All they did was snip the snip the steel, roll up the new bottom edge, and slide the base plate back on. The spring is then cut a little shorter to lower the tension and allow enough compression.
Here's a pic:

So, if one of the top 3 XD mod/part companies can do it why can't Springfield?

Fusion is where you send them a stainless slide, they coat the whole thing black, and then they take a fine grit to the sides of the slide. This removes the black and gives the stainless a brushed aluminium look which contrasts pretty well with the black that is still everywhere else (serrations, engravings, top/front/back). The example chopped 3.8 I posted the pics of was actually bitone. If you tried to scrub off the black from the melonite treatment you would find brown (like the grooves on the top of the chamber after you've fired it).
