Ok it is time for me to build my next AR, already have my home grown XM177 style Kiss AR which i love with is's 11.5 barrel/5" flash suppressor , but now i want something that can reach out a little further .Today I picked up a decent new stripped lower from a FSN buddy , got a buffer tube in a trade and ordered a LPK and Magpul stock from Lee's. But I am torn between a 16 Recce Style or an 18" SPR style . I have found complete Middy uppers that can fit my budget and be made to fit what I want , but the SPR's would have to be assembled as all the complete ones i have found are out of my price range. the cost to assemble one would be close in quality (parts wise) as the complete middy i found.
which ever route I go , this will not only serve as my 100 yard + paper killer but probably go hog hunting too with me in the future. It will have 1-4 x optics at a minimum and some other goodies i found i want for this.
Any suggestions which route I should take and why?

where do you go hog hunting....not too take this thread off topic :) lol
Don't think the effect between an 18" and a 16" are all that big. But I could be wrong. I like SPRs and I'm not sure which I would choose if I were you.
The SPR I have is pretty damn heavy. I think it weighs in at 13 lbs dry. Although the 18" barrel is fluted, it is very heavy. Combine that with a full length rail and Magpul PRS stock and big glass, and I can't imagine using it as a hog gun.

the Recce it is ... Your points make sense to me Phil.. I am planning on some trips to my buddys property a lil north and may do a guide tour with Chappys in moore haven, $50 for 1/2 day , $100 for each hog you take and $25 for them to dress it out and prepare it for you.

Recon build is definitely the way to go. That's the original SPR that the SEALS came up with as their preferred all-purpose rifle before the Navy got involved and changed it to 18" and classified it as the Mk12.
That's the style I did for the woman; as she wanted something for distance instead of CQB. That was fine by me as I preferred to go CQB and if SHTF, then I know she could have my back from higher ground while being my eyes. If I ever have the money/chance, I would like to get her a PQN and ITT NV to throw on all that rail real estate that the flat top and 12" quad affords. Grip Pod is the first must-have accessory unless you want the extra weight of dedicated bipod and forward grip.

i was thinking of the dedicated bipod on it... but chris thanks for the input , your thoughts are exactly my thought train for this.

My pleasure, and enjoy the build. Btw, I was thinking a 2-7x optic would be best all around for hunting/range/SHTF/zombies.

funny you say that , my buddy is now a distributer for this russian company that sells optics and we will be adding ammo and maybe guns soon. ( you guys will know if it happens) he has a a decent scope that is 2-10 x power that he likes a lot for about $125 or so. ( he is a Local PD Swat sniper) so I trust his call.. it will fit my budget just fine I think.

This is my 18" RRA

I have several variants but I really decided to go this route to decicate the platform to bench or prone duty.
This gun with economy ammo has proven to be a sub-moa gun time after time after several thousand rounds through it.
50 round target with PMC

In agreement with Phil this gun is EXTREMELY HEAVY.
Well Over 12 lbs with optics and accesories
BUT, it was purpose built to be a gun that stays in one place for extended periods, blind, stand bench etc. and in that regard it performs above expectations
anyhoo.

I want a bull barrel just like that, maybe the next next project..lol
The best hog gun I have ever tried was my friend's Ruger .44 mag carbine. They look exactly like a large brother to the 10/22. It's light, compact and had perfect knockdown power for hog. You rarely need a scoped rifle for hog, but you can still mount a scope on it if you so desire.
Ive shot hog with a 44 magnum handgun... still want to do a knife hunt..
