Obviously, by this question I am a noob.

I have been looking and researching in the last few days, into the cheapest route to get into an AR-15. To begin with I just want to get a rifle in my hands that won't be falling apart after a few thousand rounds. My question is what is the cheapest route? As I have discovered in my research as of yet the cheapest route to getting rounds down range appears to be one of these guns: http://www.del-ton.com/AR_15_Rifles_s/2.htm .

Are there any cheaper routes out there either complete guns or the build your own route?

If there aren't any cheaper options do any of you any experience with or feedback on these guns??

If you get a Del-Ton kit (around 450$) and throw that on a stripped lower (Spike's Tactical lower for 90$ at a local gun show) you will be in the 550$ range and it will be all new.

The CMMG bargain bin is full of different trade-ins, spares, demos, and beaters. Yes they function, but for how long is a variable.

You can also check Model1Sales for kits to slap on a gun show lower as well. Building your AR should be important to any new owner because it teaches you the weapon system, how it works, and you'll understand repairs/maintenance much better.

Plus if you get tools to do the build yourself, those tools will pay for themselves when you start doing your own mods, future builds, etc and don't have to pay labor costs for a shop to do it.

Other than the bargain bin ones that may need early part replacements, everyone else on the market (stores and individuals) still have a problem with thinking their AR's are worth gold - like this is the old AWB days or something.

Usually buying parts retail is going to make building an AR a more expensive option. If you bargain buy over the internet, usually shipping costs come into play and may negate any saving over the excise tax they slap on to complete guns (10% on handguns and 11% on rifles and shotguns and ammo). So I usually recommend building an AR if you have something very specific that you are going after and don't care for a bin of left over parts once you swapped everything out that didn't meet your needs if you bought an out of the box AR.

Thank you for all of the input.

Aside from a picatinny rail and accessories, I don't see myself modding it too much in the near future so I am not too worried about rebuying parts.

So at this point I am looking at either A) Buying a kit and a stripped lower or B) Lucking into a good used deal.

Thank you all again for all of your input, and any further advice is also appreciated.

Building will allow you to build at your own pace and budget while still keeping quality up.

I have a question... on building ARs that would probably fit just as easily here as a new thread

I have been looking for an upper for mine, and in so have been watching some of (well most of) the deals posted here and I thouht about building one also. Anyway to keep it short (er) If you bought in a bulk deal to save a little more what are the legalities of selling the unused lowers....or for a more skilled person to build out a few of the lowers and sell them as complete guns.

Any thoughts on these two rifles?

Purchasing multiple "firearms" (lowers are firearms) with the intent to resell is illegal without a FFL license. If you planned to build multiples but then decided not to you could sell them off one at a time to different individuals in FTF transactions.

DPMS makes a good rifle, as far as the other one I'm not sure of.

He wants almost double what I believe I am going to spend. Not saying it's not a good deal or not worth it, just not what I'm looking for.

Try to strike a deal! Your negotiating powers may work well.
