little mini-review...
finally FN started shipping the Five-seveN with the Trijicon night sights. after waiting a year since the 2009 SHOT show when I saw one in person I finally got one of my own. I'll get some good pictures of it later tonight. I always wanted a Five-seveN and hated the factory adjustable rear sight. the sight was adjustable which is nice for some shooters but for carry it's kinda huge. after seeing the new sights at the '09 SHOT show I knew that it was worth waiting for. unfortunately I had to wait until now which meant another price increase but I still like the gun and it's worth it to me. street price is around $1,130, fortunately I didn't pay that much.
so far I really like it, I guess it's the novelty of it shooting the 5.7mm ammo and rifle like velocity from a pistol. plus it's 20 rounds in the same size frame as a full size Glock and it comes with three magazines. I picked up a crossbreed holster for it and it's surprisingly easy to carry. one concern was the stippling of the grip and in the hostler it's actually not an issue. I carry the pistol around the 4 o clock position and walking the grip doesn't rub. in the car the grip will rest against me but doesn't rub in a bad way, you just know it's there. the grip is similar to the new Gen 4 Glocks and not the RTF version that would probably be rough to carry.
power wise it's a pretty nasty round, my buddy is in law enforcement and they test fired the standard blue tip hollow points into a kevlar vest and it went through now problem. with the trauma plate in the vest the round was stopped but he said it still did a good amount of damage. some people worry about over penetration but the same department had a shooting where they hit a guy point blank in a house raid with five AR15 rounds and they didn't go through. I bet that the non hollow point rounds would be a different story though.
shooting it lived up to what I heard about it. very accurate and very light recoil. recoil wise I'd put it a little less than 9mm so getting back on target and rapid accurate fire is easy to do. the gun pushes back but not really up, again helps to get back on target. I wasn't really trying to shoot very accurate at the range, I was testing out shooting with both eyes open and trying to get used to that since that's a little faster to shoot. so since I was trying that for the first time I wasn't getting real tight groups. I did shoot one mag trying to be accurate and I was shooting out a pretty small group.
that's all I can think of for now, I'll post some pictures and a little video of the nice flames it puts out later.
