Here's a picture along the lines of what I'm thinking for my lightweight build.
http://www.defensereview.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/daniel_defense_ddm4_on_white-1024x547.jpg
The changes from the picture would be the use of a 14.5" or 16" lightweight profile barrel, possibly a CTR instead of MOE stock, MagPul MOE grip, and everything other than the stock/grip/mags/rail would be Spike's.
Looks like the new Spike's rail system won't be ready for me to start my SBR build when I go to Spike's this Friday, so I'm thinking of doing this build since all the parts I want won't be available for the SBR. The reason I need/want all the parts available at once is because Spike's is going to make it a factory SBR for me... no engravings needed. =)

Is that the Daniel Defense AR?

Yep, that is the DDM4 Tactical model with the OmegaX 12 rail. They want 1600$ for that model. I can grab the rail, rear sight, and do the rest from Spike's & MagPul for way less.
The OmegaX rails are extremely light like the DD Lite rails and even use the same barrel nut as the Lite rails.

if you are truly looking for a lightweight build why the full length rail? Why not save some weight and go with some shorter handguards?
Yeah, that's what I wound up doing over time. My criteria for rails now are the continuous top rail but it needs to be light and short. I know eventually I'm going to put a piston system on my SBR and I'll change out the heavy Troy rail for a lighter DD Omega 7 light rail or equivalent.

No, I am actually considering the 12" OmegaX. The DD Lite and OmegaX rails are lighter than, or as light, as other companies 7" and 9" rails.
The OmegaX is also compatible with some piston systems.
The other idea I'm thinking of is doing a Spike's Striker, it's just under 6 lbs. Throw an Aimpoint T-1 on it and I'd call that a serious lightweight build.

As for my SBR build, I'm thinking of going all out crazy on the latest Spike's tech. Billet upper and lower, lightweight rail system, nickel boron bolt carrier group, nickel boron fire control group, new back up iron sights, & charging handle all made by Spike's and then get the remaining parts from them. I also want to put a one-off piston design to use that I've been researching using a combination of parts from 3 systems.
Here's pictures of the billet upper, lower, and rail system. The new rail system is going to be offered in 7", 9", 10" & 12" lengths to begin with. Later they will look into pistol length and a 14" or greater tack driver length.

But alas... not all of the new stuff is ready yet for what I want in my SBR. So it looks like I'll be doing a lightweight or just another range whore carbine.

Which one? The Striker or the SBR? (both? lol)

The striker from Spikes is pretty sick and that would be choice one if available but I would say both lol
JaxChris

Well with either one I wouldn't get the CompM4 tube. I'd get an Aimpoint T-1 or clone. I don't think a big tube red dot belongs on a lightweight build. =)
Anyone else help decide? Striker? Start the SBR anyway? Something else? Already have a Recon build done for the woman, so don't need that.

Lino... it took me a long time to pinch these pennies. At least I didn't switch hobbies to hide just how much disposable income I have for toys... like some one we know around here. *stares at Lino*
Come on guys... throw out some more ideas. Mine can't possibly be as good as it gets.
SBR.. and why not consider an EoTech.. are they too heavy?
When you finish the product I will show you how to make it lighter...I will carry it.

The picture is a 6.8 version. You want 6.8 or 5.56? Let me know and I'll find out a firm price for you while I'm there at the shop Friday. Obviously 5.56 will be cheaper. And I know the light, optic, and Count-A-Shot are owner added accessories. The rest all came from Spike's (including the Spike's branded DD Lite rail).
FYI, that 6.8 SBR has nearly every new or pre-production Spike's product in it. Nickel Boron BCG, Nickel Boron FCG (even the chamber/barrel extension of the 6.8 barrel is done in Nickel Boron), Warthog Adjustable Muzzle Brake, Troy built Spike's branded BUIS, Billet engraved charging handle, and their billet upper and lower set.

556. no sights, the rail and the brake thats it.
could also deal with a price without the rail if the offer the upper with just simple gaurds.
lastly just a price for the complete lower.
Thanks for looking for me
JaxChris
03-17-2010, 09:26 PM
Billet Lower - 315$
MagPul UBR - 250$
Enhanced LPK - 150$
So 715$ for the complete lower, but a lower only without the billet upper (currently only selling sets right now) would not be shipping until mid-late April.
And instead of the DD Lite rail you're interested in FSB, barrel nut, delta ring, and handguards? What length barrel? And do you want entry grade barrel (button rifled chrome lined), mid grade barrel (button rifled Melonite), or high grade (Cold Hammer Forged Chrome or Melonite)?
And you do or don't want the Adjustable Brake?

hmmmm......im thinkin.
length ill have to think about it, entry grade would suite me fine.

Ok, entry level barrel in stock 16" length with FSB, handguards, charging handle, nickle boron BCG, A2 flash hider on the billet upper without BUIS would be about 650$. Not sure what the cost would be to have the barrel cut/threaded/crowned to whatever you want if they don't stock the desired length.
Order the upper and lower together and you'd save 50$ getting the main billet pieces as a set.
I'll double check on the prices and find out about cost for custom lengths on the entry barrel.
JaxChris

Chris,
Upper price break down
Barrel - Entry 16" cut/crown/rethread to desired length - 200$
Billet Upper Receiver - 225$
Standard BCG - 135$
or Nickel Boron BCG - 200$
Billet Charging Handle - 30$
Delta/Nut/FSB/Hand guards/FH/Gas Tube - 75$
If you buy the billet upper and billet lower together, subtract 40$ for set pricing.
Btw... I decided to begin my SBR. Trust will be done getting drawn up sometime this week. The core of my build will be the billet upper/lower set. Oh... and it'll be a factory SBR. Tom @ Spike's is doing no charge for the factory SBR and no charge to complete and send in the stamp paperwork.
Hopefully the first stamp will come back fast. Two of the components will be added later down the road this year. The rest will be done now.
No no, don't freak. I'm still taking delivery of a complete factory SBR. The two missing pieces from the build will be upgrades.
Btw, if you are wondering about the MagPul AFG (Angled Forward Grip)... it is very comfortable and natural to use. The Osceola Sheriff's office training unit was there tweaking their new service rifle (Spike's has the contract) and they had the AFG on it. I tried it out and it was very nice. If you're use to a handguard hold, and foregrips have always felt a little off for you, then the AFG combined with a thumb brake hold is the best of both worlds.
Needless to say, the AFG or AFG2 (coming soon) is going on the SBR.
