As the title states, what would be a good starter rifle for a 12yr old boy?

the 10/22 or the crickett is a small youth .22
While I'm very fond of the Ruger 10/22, I actually started out with a single feed bolt action .22. It sort of teaches the basic mechanics of firing a rifle with having the drill of, safety on, open bolt, insert round, close bolt, acquire target, safety off, and fire.
I believe Marlin, Remington and Ruger all have youth bolt actions.

something single shot like a bolt action or lever action .22. Marlin is prob the best answer! Marlin 39 model lever action rifle.

im actually buying my son his first gun for christmas. It will be a RR BB gun. I was being serious. I personally believe its the best tool to learn firearm safety while limiting the risk for the first year or 2.
plus they are 35 bucks.
Once he has proved mastery of safety tools he will upgrade to a 10/22.
If you choose to go with a rimfire I would highly suggest a bolt action to eliminate the jamming issues which are an accident waiting to happen to someone uninitiated to firearms. Also the loading of 1 round at a time teaches good muzzle control and clearance techniques. I could go on and on but I digress

Single shot bolt action. This makes the shooter take time for each and every shot. The extra time allows the coach to help the shooter with the fundamentals.
The Ruger 10/22 makes it too easy to blaze through the ammo and not provide enough time for coaching and correction. Start with bench rest and then move to prone.

I've been thinking of getting my goddaughter started on her first gun. She's 5 and for some reason just loves guns. I think I'll start with a bb gun first and then get her up to a 10/22. Been talking with her pops and he is just as excited as me about doing it. We were going to take her out last time we went to the range in Ocala, but it was to hot that day so we passed.
