Least expensive would probably be the Olympic
GI-16 Carbine

Street Price around 650

I would go ahead and look at the base model DPMS rifles as well. They have some variants that can be had for the low 700's
Unfortunately the cost of AR series rifles is in the details of the gun. The 100 dollars more spent for one the larger manufacturers definately shows in the final product.

I'll have to check my department's manual and see which ones are authorized. Thanks.

You have some other options as well. Being a modular platform, the AR series allows you to mix and match componants.
You could build a lower and buy an upper from different manufacturers off setting costs and putting your money where you need it rather than paying for features you dont want.
The variables are virtually endless in the current market place.
You may want to consider one of the Charles Daly defense rifles as well. They are a budget minded manufacturer who seems to have an intersting offer to the market.

BSO
Bushmaster
RRA
Colt
DPMS
Armalite
I think they are removing Armalite
I know Rock River has a nice trigger right off the bat, which you would probably end up putting the money into anyway.

Thanks! I haven't looked at the manual in about 5 years.
I think there is a LE discount on these also.

Your pricing is reflective of your LEO affiliation so you would pay dramatically less than street price

Jailers included?
Chris would call me an elitist at times, but I have to explain why I would mention Model1sales.com, yet admit I probably would not buy anything from them. They sell compete kits where all you need is a stripped lower (about $100) and you put it together for a complete CAR-4 type rifle at an all out cost of about $600. There are other really cheap outfits that will sell you bargin bin stuff as well with AR's at around $500 complete at limited times.
Off the shelf tho, DPMS is cheap and very serviceable. I am not a fan of Oly, as they aren't always USGI with their stuff.

From the list the BSO has I would go with RR.
