View Full Version : Megatron Project (Delayed Even More)
Well as some as you may know I am a huge Transformers fan. That's right, proud fan since there introduction since 1983. For those that have been at my place know by all the Transformer stuff in my place and logo's every where I can throw one. So for many years I wanted to make on old Walther P-38 into a Megatron. Many years later I had not only the money but the resources to start this project. So I shopped around gunbroker for a little while and found a beat up P-38 this way I wouldn't feel bad ruining the finish on it. Being the gun was from 1961 I researched and found that I could get some remake bakelite grips to match the Walther grips from the WWII era. Below are some pics of the beginning stages.
So onto step two getting a refinisher who told me they could do the job I wanted. I found a refinisher down in Hialeah after speaking with him on many occasions I finally brought the piece in to get done. Between a mixed job of getting a high polish chrome and cerakote finish the only details to get done were the Decepticon logos. I knew this was going to be a task. Strike one, the guy couldn't get a decal stencil to adhere to the remake grips...no logos on the grips. Then the cerakote would not adhere properly the slide...screwed up logos on the slide now and flaking off. I was not a happy camper finding out I waited extra time on this piece to get done.
So I put a call in for the expertise help from www.drsairbrush.com (http://www.drsairbrush.com) up north in NY. This is an airbrush artist that I have seen raise from the ground up. From doing very basic layouts to artwork that will blow you away these days. Unfortunately he has not updated his website in a few years but if you look at his artwork I am sure you will be impressed. If you look close enough I am sure you will also see the work he has done for me in the past (of course being Transformers related). If any of you have ever watched Orange County Choppers and are familiar with the custom painter on the show "Nubs" my friend does work with him. So maybe that will give you an idea of the work he does.
So now I have to ship the parts up to NY to get this job completed. Not an easy feeling of being so close to something you have wanted for so many years.
Here are some pics of the status I am at now.

well it looks tons better than when you started
Yeah, there is some pitting that couldn't be fixed or it would have changed the rest of the gun. I am still pleased with the basic finishes. It's hard to get good pics because of high polish chrome.
Did it only flake off on one side? It looks fine in some pics.
It has to manually flaked. The guy in the shop used a small screwdriver. It was only flaked off one side. The rest still has to be done.
I could send you some little decepticon decals that might work.
I was going to go that route with you Dave, but then I forgot who it was that brought it to my attention when I am cleaning or oiling it, the decals will more than likely end up coming off. I am looking for something more permanent which I though this guy in Hialeah could do. This is why I called my friend up in NY to see what he do for me.
Don't worry I am planning on getting some more decals from you.

Hey man, I have a buddy here in town who can laser engrave your Megatron logos on there. They WONT come off. All he needs is a pattern or template to scan in, run a few test runs on sheet steel, confirm everything is good, and LASER that slide!
They'll contrast against the high polish VERY nicely. He can even do varrying shades, about 3 diffrent "colors" if you want to call em that. He just adjusts the power of the laser. He does alot of custom gun work, and is an FFL.
If you want to contact him and talk, I'll get you his number.

Scott, does he have a website that I can look at? The laser etching is definitely a good alternative to paint. You can't laser etch the plastic grips though. I have all the files he would need for his to do this.

Still have to send it to NY to get airbrushed. You having your buddy that was in HT or the clan before that do the air brushing? I forgot who it was.
Yep, Donny. "SataJet". The only person I would allow to do a job for me. He is still doing work with Nubs that painted for OCC. He told me when I was up there that he was a little bored and needed something to paint.

There is no option when it comes to this Raul. This guy is a close friend of mine now, for about 20 years. There is no other option when it comes to this.
