View Full Version : Anybody know anything about cars and alarms?

Have an issue with my Oldsmobile Cutlass. It's a '99 and it has a theft system built in that when it doesn't recognize the key it shuts off the fuel not allowing the car to start. Well lately it isn't recognizing the key and thus having some serious issues trying to get it started. Wondering if there is anyone on here that would know hoe to disable the thing. Pretty sure it isn't as simple as pulling a fuse from what I have tried to research about it. I think this is my problem (taken from some site that came up when I googled it):

The PCM communicates with the body control module (BCM) via serial data over the class 2 serial data bus, CKT 1807. When the BCM determines a passed theft condition, the BCM sends a coded password to the PCM. When the PCM receives the correct password, the PCM enables the fuel injection system, allowing the vehicle to operate correctly. The PCM may allow the car to start and quickly stall during a failed theft condition.

The following conditions may cause the PCM to enter a tamper mode:

A bad timing cycle
An incorrect password
If the BCM does not receive a password within a preset time window, the BCM will enter a short tamper mode. During this mode, the PCM will not allow the car to operate for 4 seconds.

If the password is incorrect, the PCM will enter the long tamper mode. In the long tamper mode, the following actions will occur:

The THEFT SYSTEM indicator will flash.
The fuel injectors will be shut off for approximately 10 minutes.
Although the vehicle may start, the engine will quickly stall due to a fuel cut-off.

In the event of an open in the serial data communication between the BCM and the PCM, the following actions occur:

The PCM will become fail-enabled if the car has already passed theft for that ignition cycle (i.e. the engine is running).
The PCM may set the diagnostic trouble codes (DTC).
The THEFT SYSTEM indicator will light continuously.
The PCM will become fail-enabled for future ignition cycles.
If a failure occurs in serial data before the ignition cycle, while the PCM is not fail-enabled, the PCM will never receive a valid password in order to enable the continued use of the fuel injectors

Does the key have a chip in it? You probably have to get a new one

It's a 99' not sure if it has a chip, but a new key is definately in order. Because of the complexity of your issue you may need to get a key from the dealer in order to have the passwords and everything match. Of course dealers charge an arm and an ass for everything. Goodluck bro!

yh i was hoping there was a way just to disengage the theft system...someone pointed me to a site that sells a system that overrides the theft system but it's $70...was hoping it was something I could do myself but it is looking like that is not possible.

Try the key thing first man see if you can save yourself some money.
New key is more than likely less than $70.

I work at a tire and lube garage. So I know a thing or two about car alarms.

1. They're fucking annoying

2. If you're going to put some super every trick in the kitchen including an automated blow job robot alarm in your car... please for the love of god remove the fucking old one so we don't have to hold on to the keys and click off two god damn alarms every 15 seconds.

lol...I was told there is a simple solution to my problem. Apparently GM has had some issues with cars between 97-03 with this Theft System called the Passlock II or something or other. Well from what I have been explained the system works where when u insert the key and push the tumblers it triggers a code which then goes down to the computer (BCM) and if the code that was sent from the ignition matches the one input in the BCM then the engine will turn over. If it does not then the BCM turns off the fuel injectors and thus no fuel and the car will not start or will start but will shutoff within a few seconds. Apparently after the some wear the ignition will spazz out and cause random codes to be sent to the BCM causing the Theft System to be activated despite the use of the factory key

Now the quick cheap fix I have been told is that there is a small yellow wire that runs from the ignition to the BCM that is used to relay the code from the ignition to the BCM. I was informed that to get to it I should take out the radio and I should see the 3 wires that run from the ignition to the BCM including the yellow wire. They say I need to cut that yellow wire (I can install a switch so that I can turn off connection when I want or just put electrical tape on either end and just leave it). However apparently it must be done when the car is running or else the car will not start from there on out. The only bad part of this solution is that by cutting this wire it will keep the Theft System light on permanently and also if the car battery dies I will need to take the radio out again, reconnect the yellow wire and start the car with the new battery and then take apart the wires again lol...Think I may try it this weekend. I heard the cost of the fix at the dealer will cost upward of $400 and my car isn't worth that investment right now. I just really need it to last me through the end of this year at which time i can finally buy my first home and then will get another car after that
