I went to the range this weekend with my Mosin Nagant 91/30. What a great rifle. I played it on the safe side by only loading one round at a time but I had a blast with that thing. Great rifle. Shoots straight and even with just iron sights I was on at 50 yards. It sounds like a cannon when you fire it and the metal butt plate beat the shit out of my shoulder after 40rds but I love it. Now I am going to start looking at goodies for it. combathunting.com has a ton of stuff for it. I highly suggest getting one from aimsurplus.com, they sell real nice stuff. Even the cheap ass ammo I got from them worked fine. A few cases split by the neck, noticed it when ejected, but other then that it was great!! I LOVE my Mosin Nagant!!

Alright you bastages, I ordered one. Plus my brother ordered one also. LOL!!!

Did you buy their ammo? and is that a good price?

Yes it is Cris. I've compared prices and that's the best price that I've found so far. And coming from one cheap bastard, you can take my word for it lol.

I'm gonna lay mine out in the sun today to let the cosmoline ooze out of the rifle.

I ordered their ammo and it worked well. Like I said a few cases split up near the neck but no one is going to reload them anyway. You can not beat the ammo price. The Czech ammo is by far the best deal out there. Great rifle.

Funny thing about the cosmoline. I cleaned the hell out of the rifle, took it apart down to bare bones twice. I thought I had it all cleaned out but yesterday while at the range the barrel heated up a touch and you could see the cosmoline run out of the wood. Yuck.

Great rifle at a great price. I couldnt be happier.

I may try the sun thing also. As far as the metal parts, looks like I will be refreshing the chemicals in the sonic cleaner.

Just checked the AIM website, they dont have the Mosin Nagant listed any more. I guess they sold out. My next mil surplus piece will be a M1 Garand.

Looks like I won't be getting mine now. Actually I found a guy in Central FL looking to do a FTF for one of the Mosin's with 400 rounds and some accessories (tri-rail and buttstock pad) for 250$. Not quite as cheap as Aimsurplus but the shoulder padding sounds like a good deal after what Dan said.

Got the order confirmation.

You got a second email?

I want to get some ammo now also, any good buys? Aim surplus again?

Dan, im curious, is the bolt hard to "manipulate". What i mean by that is whether or not it is difficult to transition it to the cocked position (when in the). I have to slap the bolt handle to get it into that position. I have taken the bolt apart and everything seems clean. Any ideas?

I'm suspecting cosmoline in the chamber.

Mine is pretty smooth. I have heard stories about guys having to use a chunk of 2x4 to actuate the bolt. Cosmoline can cause a tough bolt. Is it tough with a case in the chamber or empty? If you are having a tough time closing the bolt with a case in the chamber you could have a variety of issues. One issue could be a burr on the chamber or bolt causing the stiff condition. You will see a gouge in the rim of the shell case if that is the situation. Another possibility is you may have overly tight headspace. If you are having a tough time closing the bolt without a shell chambered then it could be a little burr somewhere or cosmoline build up somewhere. The first Mosin Nagant I fired, belonging to a guy at the range, had a tough bolt. I had to smack it open and closed. I suppose even my Mosin Nagant needs a firm hand compared to a new rifle.

I will be inspecting mine before it leaves the shop and make any minor modifications needed.

well, what ill do is polish the bolt and clean the chamber. If that doesn't fix the issue, then ill start looking for other factors. I don't have any ammunition to cycle-check the rifle. I ordered from aim sometime last week but i'm not sure when that will arrive. How were you able to check headspace? I remember you posting your concern about this.

Even with this sticky bolt, i am happy with the purchase! Gives me something to do =).

Honestly, I never did check the headspace. I loaded a round, said a prayer and pulled the trigger. I then examined the first spent case for loose headspace signs. Headspace can be to tight so you will not be able to chamber a round and close the bolt or too loose where you can get expanding cases or explosions. I was nervous about mine being too loose as that is the scenario that can hurt you. I also took the spent case and loaded it again and shook it around to see if I could hear the case moving around in the rifle with the bolt closed. It all seemed good. If anyone on here has a "go-no go" headspace gauge for this rifle I would pay to borrow it for a few minutes.

Didn't know what email to use, so I sent the direct link to you via PM since the PM notifications you get in email here contain the messages.

Enjoy.

I completely took apart the rifle today. Cleaned out as much cosmo as i could. Been taking apart the bolt many times as well and i think i figured out whats causing it to stick so much.

I will provide pics later. The little notches where the bolt rotates into that holds it in the cocked position seems a bit too edged and not rounded enough requiring a lot of force to actuate it. I need to go and buy a small file to round it off.

A part of me is thinking that it's in proper working order and that perhaps it's just me and my inexperience with bolt action rifles. This is after all my first one.

I'm sure that after playing with this mosin nagant, i will have a great respect and appreciation for modern rifles when i finally get the rem 700 in my hands lol.
