Have a few brands to choose from at a pretty good price, wanted some feedback from the peanut gallery as to which make/model I should go with. The contenders are:
Remington UMC
MagTech
American Eagle TMJ
American Eagle FMJ
Speer Gold Dot
Basically, which are brass and anyone have experience or recommendations between these brands?
Thanks.
Which MagTech? The Speer Gold Dot is decent defense ammo while the Remington and both American Eagle are just range ammo, so you aren't comparing apples to apples. They should all be brass. My least favorite is the UMC which runs dirty and the crimp seems pretty weak as I've been growing a collection of compressed rounds from FTF's that didn't happen with other brands in my 9mm AR.
If you are looking at range ammo I would go with American Eagle, I have been hearing they are pretty consistent and far cleaner than that Remington UMC which reminds me of Winchester Whites.

yeah i have been shooting Winchester JHP (for self defense though), American Eagle FMJ, and Stone Hart. I just have gone through only 1 mag of the Stone Hart so still need to fire more rounds. Winchester weren't bad but couldn't beat the American Eagle FMJ for the range for it's price etc. Seem to pretty clean and haven't had a single FTF or FTE but have had for the Winchester and Stone Hart.
With that said to continue on this topic what rounds do people also suggest for personal defense?
I use Remington Golden Saber's, Hydra Shock's and right now in the XD Fear No Evil's.

Yes, I'm looking at this as range ammo. The Speer Gold Dot's and American Eagle's are only a difference of 10$/500.
I found a stash of 45 ammo and I've been negotiating prices with the guy to get my hands on some because I want to start taking the 45 to the range each weekend until I'm satisfied with my performance.
It's going to take some time to get used to when all I've ever shot before were 9mm's, AR-15/M-16's, and a Five-Seven (basically all easy kick guns). The XD45 is far easier on the rest than I expect, but there's still a very noticeable difference.
The .45 is a sweet shooter. Not much to get used to there. I would rather shoot that than the sub compact 9mm.
+1 Shooting .45 on a full size platform is hands down my favorite. I could shoot it all day long. The next question begs if you plan to shoot that much of it, is which one feeds reliably in the gun.

Well as I was telling Cris, I don't want to just have the 45 sit around or else why did I get it? I could see myself burning off 50 rounds a week for an hour at a time. So unless supply/demand start showing some even ground here soon I could see the benefit in getting enough to last me for 6 months.
I'm still considering the conversion barrel though for 9mm if things are still ridiculous at that. Especially if Congress starts kicking the microID idea around again and I can get enough 9mm ammo to last a long time. Considering the difference in price between 9 and 40/45 right now I could make up the cost of the barrel, recoil spring, and mags after just 1000 rounds.
If I wasn't such a frugal SOB I would be spending like mad on anything I could get my hands on.
Just wish I could find 45 brass for 30-35 cents/round and I wouldn't care.
Considering a 22 pistol just to burn off a ton of ammo at the range whenever I want and not care.
I have had good luck with the Speer Lawman ammo in my .45.

Ah come on Jax, I'm disappointed in you. You're suppose to be the one that researches all of this on your own and comes up with the best logical choice by specification and cost ratio.
Not come on here and hear an ear full from Cris about dirty rounds or steel casings.

So you approve of American Eagle FMJ but not Speer HP's?
I have shot American Eagle, have not shot speer.
