Enjoy Cris... time to order that AK-74. But why do I have the feeling Joe will order one before you just so he can say he bought a 1000 rounds of something for 150$. lol
Funny you posted this. I have been looking online at AK-74 prices since 5.45X39 is so abundant and cheap. Only problem is the 74 seems to be a pricey piece. I can not seem to find one cheaper then around $900.00. I will continue to look. Honestly, the wife will murder me with it if I buy one anyway so I probably will not be getting one. I must say if I knew about the shortage on 7.62x39 prior to getting my AK-47, I would have gotten the 74.

I've found AK-74's for 700$, but definitely not as cheap as they should be. Obvious problems being semi-auto is a bitch to find in surplus, manufactured new pieces are overpriced because they're "made in the USA", and we can't own the 25$ full auto AK's that the 3rd world enjoys all day. =(

Replied to your PM. Honestly I don't know much about AK-variants outside of how the Kalashnikov action work.
May want to ask some of the older bucks here, I just find the deals. Don't really start learning everything I can about something until I'm dead-set on getting into it myself.

and YES!! Good god the ammo!!
So just how many deals am I going to find this year that will lead to you buying additional weapons? I think I should be getting a commission off of you somehow.
Next I'm going to try to find 5.7mm @ 300/1000. If I can find that price in-stock all-day long then I'll be getting a Five-seveN pistol again for sure, and maybe even a PS90 (which will have to eventually get an SBR stamp lol).

It'll be hard to find the upper, but there would definitely be value in it over the long run. Just have to stock up now in case some bill about education has some rider in it banning ammunition importing. lol

As i stated above, i have been seriously considering this cartridge. The platform to choose from is the trouble.
Just wondering, which would the folks here prefer? The AR or AK platform? The price of an upper is the same as the price of a built AK. Pro's and cons? Which platform is easier to clean? I ask this because the majority of the ammo available is corrosive.

ok.... ummmm.... i just bought one, should be on its way to guntech soon. God help me and this addiction. lol
went with the polish tantal. check it out at classic arms! comes with 2 mags and bipod. It is a century build which i confirmed. This is important because for those interested, the first batch had the wrong barrel (wrong twist rate) which caused shots to keyhole. This issue has been addressed with the newer builds.
btw, for my fellow ak lovers, they have wolf 7.62x39 for 299+shipping which is a good price atm.

You're a crack fiend now with this stuff.
I'm still thinking the Mosin is the only relic (or soon to be) weapon worth stocking up for. After that, jumping into all these other weapons isn't really needed and that money could be better spent on your existing modern weapons. This is just my thought though.
I would prefer to build up my AR collection since it is all interchangeable and still has replacement parts that won't be banned from importation.

And since you're so dead set on this stuff, thought I would help you out.
Here's an extra source of 5.45 ammo: 2160rnd/340$ @ 15.7 cents/rnd (just in case the 1080rnd cases dry up at the other place)
http://www.ammunitiontogo.com/catalog1/product_info.php/cPath/0_24_84/products_id/3012
And if you decide to go the AR-mod route, here's where you can get mags before they get discontinued:

Cant seem to find the AR uppers for 5.45. If I could I think that would be the direction I go with the lower I just bought.

Just to spur your addiction a little more. My form 1 for one of these should be back very soon now.

The build is being done by Gary at Overland industries, one of the top AK builders in the land. I've already stacked a crate of 5.45 in my closet. Hehe.

LOL< quit while youre ahead!! Seriously though, I actually have zero to little experience with this round. I only got a parts kit and a receiver and the build is still in process right now. Should be mid June before she is back here. From what I have learned about the 5.45 round is that most of it has corrosive primers and is non reloadable. However, it is cheap and plentiful. I have also read that the russians favored this round because of the "tumbling" characteristic it has when it penetrates a target. Creates a very nasty exit wound. Mags are available, copes distributing has bulgarian ak74 mags for $20 a mag. I have some bakelite mags that are East German and they are very nice though they run about $35 per mag. Bakelite mags are the type pictured above with the "wooden" finish.

i actually just ordered 10mags from copes. In other threads, they are apparently russian plums that have been painted over in black. Once the black paint is removed, the beautiful plum color is revealed. What sucks though is that the markings have been "scratched" off or "sanitized" as they put it. At this point, i dont care, i just want mags. 12 mags should be gtg (for now).
I'm looking for a good source of bakelites though. 45rnd mags are $99. Not for me, not at this point anyways. If you come across any good sources please do share.

I was thinking the same thing. You would have to be crazy to try to stock up on ALL the calibers you have...that is unless you have $$$$$$$$$ which i don't. I'm too late for 223/556 and 7.62x39...the time for these have passed (price wise) hence my move to 7.62x54r and 5.45x39. Ammo is readily available and i still have time to stock up on these two.
As for other calibers, i'll pick em up as i find em.
Best of both worlds, build an AR and use a 5.45 upper. When you run out of 5.45 or the surplus dries up you can go back to good old .223 or 5.56 by simply changing out the upper.

Exactly the suggestion I was trying to make for Joe. The price savings in running a bunch of 5.45 ammo will pay for the upper. Currently the problem is finding a 5.45 upper because most manufacturers have stopped making them while trying to fill 5.56 backorders.
Also, 5.45 is quite corrosive so buy more than 1 upper if you can so you can just discard them after their life is up instead of trying to repair it. The savings is that significant that this still favors over getting 5.56, short of running Wolf. With Wolf you have non-corrosive primers but there is still debate on whether the soft-steel casings wear out the extractor. As long as you have a good Crane O-ring and M4 feed ramps you can even run shitty Brown Bear hard steel casings without a problem (I would run Wolf and only touch Brown Bear if SHTF and nothing else was available).
And be honest, it's not that expensive to swap an extractor after 20,000 rounds. Nothing else is of real concern from running soft-steel ammo, except obviously not being able to reload it.

I caught a 5.45 S&W complete upper on gunbroker.com the other day.

Sweet!! More the reason for you to finish up that lower!! Post pics of the upper when you receive it!
The reason why i went the AK route is availability. Mags and parts are plentiful (atm) and i really like the ruggedness and looks of the AK more. For less than the price of the upper, i got an entire working rifle. Don't get me wrong, down the road i would still like to get the upper though lol.

DAMMIT! i only got 2 cans of 5.45 and now AIM doesn't have it listed anymore! I hope ammo in this caliber doesn't get scarce like 7.62x39 and 223!
