Who here has one or has experience working on one?

Been thinking of adding a shotgun to the armory for a very LONG time now. And i'm glad i waited this long. Been able to really get a feel for what i want. I am confident that i am set on getting a Saiga 12 but pending some issues.

1- i would like it converted (modify it so it can accept traditional ak parts and accessories)
2- i would need some direction into shortening the barrel or rather getting a shorter barrel. Where to acquire one, how to install it and the papers to make it legal.

i'm basically looking into something along the lines of this: YouTube - Tromix Saiga 12 SBS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Re7goKbKWiM)

Anyone have an idea how much $$ it would take to do it? I would like to do it over a period of time.

I looked into this project not too long ago. It seems to be very easy to accomplish with readlily available parts, however, if you want to do it right, you need access to a welder who can fill in the Saiga trigger and connector holes and then re-park the receiver. Otherwise you have these ugly holes exposed on the side. The other thing that most at home conversions don't do is to have an original trigger guard installed which requires the removal of the mag release and spot weld and rivet. Otherwise, you need to drill and screw on or rivet an adapted trigger guard.

So Joe, you're saying asians as good a marksman as they are drivers and need a sawed off scatter-rifle just to make sure they hit something? lol

I watched that video and I thought I was in another reality hearing that sound coming from a rifle. And why you want an auto-shotty? You know yourself from CS that a pump does far more damage against soft and armored targets. lol

I am with Class 3 Phil on this, he can also enlighten you how to properly get the paperwork for a short barrel.

Since it is a smoothbore, you can easily have the barrel cut without having it pressed out of the trunion. However, if you want it threaded for a muzzle break, then you would probably have to have it removed. Prior to cutting the barrel, you need to complete a Form 1 to build an SBS and once you receive the approved form and stamp, cut away. Joe since you live in Miami, there is no hope of getting a Form 1 approved individually, so you will have to go either the Corporate or Trust route.

I was thinking of forming a trust just for the hell of it, regardless if I ever have a Class 3 weapon or not. I figure one day I'll want to toy around with silencers or an SBR though.

Could you elaborate on the "trust" as to what it is, what it is needed for, and how one would go about getting one. I guess I am still very green in the world of firearms.

Dan..the NFA section of the forum has lots of info on trusts..you can ping me off line as well if you need more detailed info

As for the SBS..might as well go with a tromix..tony rumore does amazing work...but you need to buy the converted gun..he stopped taking on new guns when the waiting list hit 2 years

Honestly guys, i know crap about any paperwork concerning class3 weapons or the like. I don't even know where to start!

After careful consideration, i think i would be better off just buying the s17 rather than buying an off the shelf saiga12 and then doing the modifications myself. Although it would be a good learning experience, i just don't have the resources or the time to do it myself (safely). So, if i ...or rather, when i buy the s17 lol, where do i start as far as paper works go?

BTW, thanks for the offer on the welding Dan, i just might take you up on that on other projects if you're interested later on.

revisited:

I see that there is a "sporter" version. Is this pretty much a factory "converted" saiga?

Are the Saiga 12s decent shot guns? The idea is cool but they look kind of shabby. Do they work well?

Most of the feedback I've had has been that they run like a top. The only complaint that I know of is a customer that had feeding issues with their .410 model primarily due to the magazine. The shells kept getting hung up in both mags. I deburred the mags and it slightly improved. My theory was that it was probably the shells being a hair too long. I would bet that if he shopped around, he would find a brand or two that would have no issues.

I haven't heard any complaints with the 12g. All I know love it! They say the recoil feels a lot lower than with a regular frame 12g.

I don't think Joe pays for anything except for guns, ammo, food, and shit paper. He might not even buy the food. Sadly I have heard that Joe buys everything and shoots nothing. lol
